Encore® 700 Chemical Metering Pumps Provide SNWA with A Decade of Flawless Service at River Mountains

Built in 2002, Southern Nevada Water Authority's (SNWA) River Mountains Water Treatment Facility is a state-of-the-art water treatment facility that delivers 300 million gallons per day and was designed to be expanded to deliver up to 600 million gallons per day of treated water in the future. On-site hypochlorite generation is handled by nine onsite hypochlorite units that can each produce 2,000 pounds per day of equivalent chlorine for residual disinfection in the Las Vegas Valley Water District distribution system. Each unit is fed about 2,300 gallons per day of saturated brine solution.

"The eighteen Encore® 700 metering pumps have provided precision pumping and metering of the salt brine solution over the past decade with minimal maintenance."

Todd Pickle, Chemical Engineer, Water Treatment Division, River Mountain and Alfred Merrit Smith Water Plants, Southern Nevada Water Authority

Installed along with the hypochlorite generation units (in 2002 and in 2006 as part of an expansion) were eighteen Encore® 700 diaphragm chemical metering pumps (nine double-simplex units). Salt brine is one of the most challenging chemicals to feed due to the inherently corrosive nature of the liquid as well as the precision required to feed the electrolyzers of the onsite generation units. Encore® 700 pumps have a 20 year history of providing the serviceability of a mechanical pump and the robust precision of a diaphragm pump. With simple annual maintenance that includes an oil change and inspection of the head assembly, the SNWA maintenance staff has been able to maintain continuous metering service from the same Encore® pumps without unnecessary down-time for over a decade.
